Know your Financial Rights and Responsibilities.
The more you know about your financial rights and responsibilities, the easier it is to avoid costly surprises and reach your financial goals. Take the time to inform yourself about rates, terms and potential penalties associated with financial products and services.
Payday loans have become very popular in today’s lending market, but once you've accessed their services, it can be very difficult to get out of the loop. Chances are if you can’t afford the purchase today, you won’t be able to afford the repayment to a payday lender next month when the cost of the loan and interest have been added. A payday loan that costs $21 per $100 borrowed is the same as an annual interest rate of 546%. A $300 payday loan for 14 days can cost you $63 and if you miss the repayment date, you can be charged another $40 fee making the total repayment $403.
Cash Advances on Credit Cards
By applying for and using credit cards, you entering into a legally binding contract. Always read the terms and conditions and ensure you understand your obligations for repayment, interest charges and the consequences of non-payment or late payments.
Financial Consumer Agency of Canada reports that 51% of Canadians incorrectly believe that they won’t pay interest on a cash advance as long as the balance is paid by the statement due date.
Whenever you take a cash advance, use credit card convenience cheques or use your card for cash-like-transactions, such as wire transfers/money order purchases/travelers cheque purchases/gaming transactions, you can be charged a cash advance fee and interest will begin to be charged daily until the entire cash charge has been repaid.
You do not have to wait until you receive your statement to begin repayment. To reduce interest charges, begin repayment as soon as possible.
Breaking your Mortgage
If you think you might benefit from better rates and lower payments by breaking or switching your mortgage, double check your mortgage contract first! Breaking or switching your mortgage can result in heavy penalties and fees.
While your mortgage contract must clearly disclose the costs, it is your responsibility to understand your mortgage contract. Ensure that you weigh the benefits and risks before you break or renegotiate your current contract. Benefits can include lower rates, lower monthly payments and paying off your mortgage sooner. While risks can include a large prepayment penalty, which could be more than any savings you receive, or receiving no savings at all if you end up selling your home shortly after renegotiating.
As Canadians we are lucky to have strong protections, but it is up to us to ensure that we take the necessary precautions to read and understand financial agreements.
