Canadian Households Spend More than they Earn.

Posted: November 8, 2016

National statistics tell us that for every $1.00 Canadians earn, we spend $1.65 (1). From this number alone it becomes abundantly clear that we are not living within our means. While we may have heard this phrase before, why don’t we listen? Credit is continuously used to purchase items that we can’t wait to have and future pay cheques are leveraged so these items can be obtained immediately. As a result, 42% of Canadians age 35 – 44 are struggling to or are not keeping up with bill payments and financial obligations (2).

To live within your means, you need to know what you are spending, you need to have a plan and you need to stick to it!

Step 1: Understand your spending habits

  • Keep track of everything you spend money on every day for a couple of months;
  • Find a system of recording your expenses that works for you;
  • After reviewing your spending habits for a couple of months, you will have a clearer picture of how you are spending your money and where to cut back.

Step 2: Look for Savings

  • Avoid impulse spending – always shop with a list;
  • Plan ahead to reduce spending;
  • Lower your bank fees – choose a bank account that meets your needs and avoid unnecessary fees;
  • Save up and pay cash for items when they are on sale.

Step 3: Maintain a Household Budget

  • Map out your income, expenses and savings;
  • Learn the difference between wants and needs – put your needs first;
  • You will always have to face challenges, but having and maintaining a household budget will help you positively deal with these challenges.

Step 4: Employ strategies to avoid debt

  • Leave debt and/or credit cards at home;
  • Shop with cash;
  • Decrease the limit on your credit cards;
  • Set up automatic bill payments;
  • Avoid impulse buying. Sleep on it and see if you still want the item the next day and ensure it fits within your household budget;
  • Avoid “buy now / pay later” offers;
  • Maintain a household budget.

Manage your money and debt wisely - don’t spend money that you haven’t earned yet. If credit is used to make a thoroughly researched, well thought out life purchase, spend a significant amount of time and energy paying off the debt as soon as possible.
